Many sketchers are happy sketching isolated objects from the comfort of home, but they struggle when they try urban sketching:

  • don’t know how to start their sketch and how to prevent getting caught up in the details
  • want to improve their colours and create lively sketches but don’t know how to achieve that.
  • want to know how to sketch various elements such as trees, sky, water, cars, etc.
  • don’t know the best medium and technique to use for their sketch.
  • don’t feel comfortable sketching on location and haven’t established an easy-to-use urban sketching kit.

This course addresses all those issues and has been built in response to the real struggles of the participants of SketchingNow courses.

In Watercolour On Location you will learn:

  • how to start sketching a complex scene, how to find a story (a focal point) and how to decide what to leave out
  • how to improve colour and value (including shadows, temperature, capturing light and more)
  • ways of learning how to sketch various elements such as trees, skies, water
  • how to work out whether to start with line or wash and how to make watercolour decisions as you work
  • the logistics of urban sketching with watercolour – managing your palette and water etc. finding places to sit.

I absolutely loved the course. It pushed me outside my comfort zone of my usual graphic style.

I wanted to sketch faster on location, more spontaneous and I think I have learned how to do that!

I normally blindly sketch whatever is in front of me that i like, but I never asked myself “why am I sketching this?”

I plan to take a few minutes longer selecting my scene so I can tell a better story.

I have taken many courses from different artists, so I can say that from my point of view,

your courses set a very high bar for everyone else!

I can hardly wait for what you will come up with next!

Yvonne

Who is the course for?

Watercolour on Location has been designed for sketchers with some experience – with some general drawing and watercolour skills. It’s built upon the concepts, skills and techniques developed in other SketchingNow courses – including Foundations, Edges and Watercolour.

In order to explore some new fun topics such as composition, mastering values, and capturing light, we need to have a working knowledge of how to draw basic scenes, look for important edges, and to know how to use our watercolour palette.

If you need instruction (or a brush-up) on the following topics, I would recommend you check out the Watercolour course first:

  • knowing how to mix watery, juicy and pasty washes
  • knowing how to layer (glazing) and work wet (wet in wet)
  • understanding basic colour theory and mixing – achieving vibrant mixes and creating watercolour magic
  • having your own palette of colours which suits your sketching at the moment
  • knowing the difference between working from light to dark and starting with the darks.

This course has a tremendous amount of information to think through, practice, use again and again.

I could go on and on about what a wonderful course you have given to us, just amazing!

One of my big takeaways for this course was. Interpret the scene, the story that captures my interest and to keep light values light even if everything seems dark.

I just want to keep sketching for the sheer joy of being lost in the scene! Thank you, thank you!!

Lura

Materials

There is no set materials list for this course but these are the minimum requirements:

  • your normal watercolour kit
  • your normal brush
  • your normal sketchbook*
  • a pen with permanent ink (a fineliner or fountain pen)

The only special recommendation for this course is to have some markers to create a 5 step-value scale. Recommended markers are Pitt Artist Pens (Warm Grey 272, 273, 274 and Black 199) or Tombow (N75, N65, N45, N15). A minimal marker option would be to purchase a black marker and a mid-grey water-soluble marker. Tombow N65 or Ecoline 718. You can achieve the 3 greys by layering the mid-grey marker to create dark grey and adding water to get light grey. More information in the Materials List below.

*Feel free to use whichever sketchbook you prefer. Liz used the Stillman and Birn Alpha Softcover sketchbook for the theory exercises and the Moleskine A4 watercolour sketchbook for the outdoor demos.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the course live or pre-recorded?
Both! The course contains 16 hours of pre-recorded videos which can be watched at any time. The only live component is the special livestreams as part of the Group Run-through. There will be two livestreams for each lessons (one per week) at alternating times to suit everyone. (8am and 8pm Sydney time AEST)

Can I do the course at another time?
Yes! If you are not able to join in the Group Run-through, it’s still worth considering signing up now. You’ll have lifetime access to all the lessons and can work through the exercises at your own pace.

When will the next Group Run-through be?
It will most likely be 12 months before I’ll be able to host another Group Run-through for Watercolour On Location (mid 2021) – though of course you can work through the lessons at any time.

Can I sketch from photos rather than going outside on location?
Yes! This course was designed to help people achieve better results when sketching out on location but also contains lots of indoor theory exercises using photos. So even if you don’t go outside there is plenty in the course for you – using my photos.
It’s also totally fine to do the outside exercises using your own photos or using scenes at home (interior spaces, views through windows or in your garden). We are living in very uncertain times, so it’s important that we all stay safe!

Do I need to have any special social media accounts?
Everything you need to access the lessons, post homework and interact with others is contained within the SketchingNow classroom. The only exception are the Group Run-through Livestreams which will occur on Youtube. A YouTube account is needed to interact with the live chat but without it you can still watch the livestream and send your questions via email. Replays will be available.

I was so enthused about this class that I did about 98 percent of the homework

and pushed everything else out of my life. It was two months very well spent!

I learned how to decide on story and I’m now careful to leave out what doesn’t help the story.

I learned how to research something I don’t know how to draw.

Previously I always thought I had to take a workshop on each element, so you’ve saved me lots of money and time!

And I also
I learned how to use a grey scale and a thumbnail to determine where the lights and darks go.

I have always wanted to learn how to do that! Now I do.

Next to your Edges course, this course is now my very favorite. I sing your praises all the time, Liz.

Thank you for the ton of work you put into this. Truly outstanding!!
