Why learn Watercolour

When you begin sketching with watercolour it’s common to create sketches with murky washes, flat colours and areas that are overworked. Gaining a solid understanding of how pigment suspended in water behaves is the secret to producing lively watercolour washes.

In this course, you’ll learn a few specific strategies for using watercolour in a quick and spontaneous way that makes the most of its unique properties.

The more you understand about watercolour the more you can work with it rather than fight against it!

This will liberate your sketching and you’ll find that watercolour will start performing magic on your page.

In the Watercolour course you will learn how to:

– increase your control of water – whether using a precise style or working looser and taking risks
– decide when to layer/glaze and when to work wet-in-wet
– create vibrant colours with a limited palette
– be more confident with your use of colour
– apply all these techniques to sketching on location
– develop your own style for watercolour sketching

You’ll be part of an inspiring community of sketchers from around the world who will share their unique styles. You’ll never lack inspiration! You’ll have lifetime access to an incredible gallery of watercolour sketches inside our virtual classroom.

You can use these techniques for any subject matter, for a variety of different sketching styles and any level of experience. You don’t need to be producing ‘masterpiece’ sketches to create some watercolour magic!

“This course is by far the best course I’ve ever had and I only regret I didn’t know about it sooner when I first started 5 years ago.

Compared to my early work, I’m now using much juicier colors. I also pay attention to values much more than I did in the beginning giving my paintings depth.“

Janice
“I’ve been watercoloring for 20 years, and still learned so much in this course!

It helped me to be more confident in using watercolors in my sketches, and helped me appreciate the intermingling of colors, watercolor marks, and other “happy accidents” as good things. I no longer fear them as mistakes that I would have to fix.“

Annette
“Despite having dabbled with watercolour for a few years, I was always frustrated by it, and didn’t understand why my paintings didn’t turn out how I wanted.

The explanation of ‘watery, juicy, pasty’ and ways to control the amount of water and pigment was a revelation! Such basic concepts, but I had never grasped it before.”

Claire
“When I am mixing colour now, I'm constantly thinking about how I can achieve a pigment party. I’m also thinking about how strong my hues and values are so that I can achieve lightness in my sketch.

Watercolour is now part of my everyday life & I credit that to taking part in these wonderful SketchingNow classes.“

Mary
" What a wonderful gift of community you have given all of us! The fact that we were able to open our most inner selves and share with a like-minded community is truly a gift I will always treasure.

Your creation of this community has allowed us to take chances, explore new ideas and lend each other a helping hand, is a true gift!!"

Will Watercolour help me develop my own style?
It’s really important to have confidence in your own personal expression and acceptance of your own mark-making. But it’s hard to develop these if all you do is follow demo-based art classes.

Watercolour is a concept based course designed to help you really understand the essential skills and at the same time develop your own style and preferences. Once you become more comfortable with your own preferences and style the whole creative journey will become so much more fun!
I’ve been painting for a while… will Watercolour be too basic for me?
Even though it’s a course designed for beginners there is a lot of content for more seasoned painters/sketchers.

Watercolour sketching (particularly out on location) involves a different approach from traditional watercolour studio painting and this is what we will explore in the course.

So even if you have painted a lot in the studio there will be plenty of new concepts for you to explore inside Watercolour . We also look specifically at quick direct watercolour approaches.
