Travel Sketching Materials List

Travel Sketching Materials List

Similar to other SketchingNow courses, Travel Sketching has no specific material requirements.

It’s strongly recommended to use the supplies you already own and are comfortable with.

A key objective of the course is to help you discover which materials suit you best, and the way to achieve this is by starting with your existing tools.

Basic Requirements

  • A range of pens and pencils (such as a thin pen, a thick pen and a pencil)
  • Some form of colour that can be used dry (without water). Limit your selection to 9-12 colours. Include a primary triad (yellow, red, blue), a green, a brown, a grey, one dark colour, and two light colours
  • A small sketchbook with paper suitable for your choice of colour – (size: A5 or 8.5×5.5”) in either landscape, portrait or square format
  • Optional: Watercolour (there is no need to use watercolour for this course, especially if you are a beginner, but recommendations for a start palette are listed below)

Detailed Listing

This is a list of all the materials that Liz uses in the Travel Sketching course with a few additional notes.

Pens and Pencils

  • Everyday Pen: UniPin 0.3 mm permanent fineliner or Fountain pen: Lamy Joy with a fine nib filled with Black De Atramentis Document Ink.
  • Expressive Pen: UniPin brush pen or Faber Castell Pitt Brush Pen (both of these have permanent pigmented ink) or Fountain Pen: Sailor Fude de Mannen 55 degree fude fountain pen filled with Black De Atramentis Document Ink.

Notes:

1. You do not need to use the same colours or brand of watercolour pencils as Liz. Any dry media or water-soluble colour will work.

2. Limit your selection to 9-12 colours. Include a primary triad (yellow, red, blue), a green, a brown, a grey, one dark colour, and two light colours.

Brushes

Liz uses both a water brush and her normal sable blend dagger brush in this course:

  • Pentel Aquash water brush in medium and large.
  • Rosemary and Co 3/8″  Sable blend dagger R16 pocket brush (this is the same as Series 772)

Notes:

1. A medium water brush is the recommended size for an A5 or smaller-sized sketchbook.

2. A dagger brush is not recommended for beginners—suggest Rosemary and Co Sable blend Pointed Round pocket brush R13 instead.

Watercolour Paints

Liz uses watercolour through Travel Sketching but it’s not a major component of the course or a requirement that you use the same colours. It is recommended that you use your current palette!

In the course, Liz uses:
