Edges Group Run-through 2019 – FAQ

What will happen during the Run-through?

The Run-through is simply a suggested timetable for working through the lessons starting on Wednesday 17 April.

As there is a lot of content in the course, and it’s hard to keep up, we are proposing 2 weeks per lesson.

Lesson 1 (Indoor Exercise) – Wed 17 April
Lesson 1 (Outdoor Exercise) – Wed 24 April
Lesson 2 (Indoor Exercise) – Wed 01 May
Lesson 2 (Outdoor Exercise) – Wed 08 May
Lesson 3 (Indoor Exercise) – Wed 15 May
Lesson 3 (Outdoor Exercise) – Wed 22 May
Lesson 4 (Indoor Exercise) – Wed 29 May
Lesson 4 (Outdoor Exercise) – Wed 5 Jun

An email will be sent out on Wednesdays at 8pm Sydney, Australia time to let you know that it’s time to move on the the next lesson.

Can I participate even though I am in a different time zone to Sydney, Australia?

Yes! There is no live component, so you can log into the classroom at any time to view the lessons, ask questions and/or upload your work.

Is there anything I need to do before the Run-through starts?

The only requirement is to have have your supplies ready (refer to the materials list here).

I prefer to work at my own pace, can I do that?

Yes, of course! This timetable is totally optional and you can work through the lessons whenever it suits you.

Teacher Interaction during the Run-through

During the first two weeks of the Group Run-Through Liz will be in the classroom at some point each day (Monday – Saturday) looking at the work uploaded, answering questions Please note: She will not be commenting on individual homework.

Due to workshops in Italy Liz will have limited access to the classroom during May and June, however she will endeavour to answer questions once a week.

New features are being added to the classroom:

  • a question section in each lesson so that you can more easily ask me questions related to the lessons.
  • an additional homework gallery for ongoing work so that people who are re-doing the course can post extra sketches which use the concepts from the lesson

What happens after the Run-through finishes?

If you get behind during the 8 week period of the Run-through, you can finish off the lessons at any time.

The classroom will become quieter but there will always be some people working through the lessons at any time. And yes, you have lifetime access so you can come back to the lessons whenever you want.

How is Edges different from the upcoming Watercolour On Location course?

  • Important concepts and techniques for ink and wash.
  • How to decide what to draw in ink and what to paint – how these decisions affect creating a focus and depth in your sketches.
  • The importance of differentiating hard and soft edges
  • How and why to vary line weight
  • The importance of creating strong tonal contrast and how to work with lost and found edges
  • Although there is a lot of watercolour tips in the course there is a strong focus on drawing.

Watercolour on Location:

  • In the new course we build on all these skills with a greater emphasis on using watercolour.
  • It also will assume a working knowledge of watercolour (mixing watery, juicy and pasty washes, mixing colours and building your own palette, layering vs working wet and working from light to dark vs starting with darks).
  • In the course we will look at composition, value and colour in much more detail. As well as how to paint various elements (trees, skies, water etc). We will also look at the logistics of painting on location (with or without ink) and much more!
  • The Watercolour On location course will assume that people understand and are working on the concepts and techniques from Foundations, Edges and Watercolour.
